Week 8
This week, I read about how the Baltimore Museum is currently collecting work, solely from women artists.(Gross, 2019) This decision is read as progressive by some and controversial by others. While promoting and collecting works by female artists is progressive, however, it begs the question-what about people who donated work whose artists were not female? Is there work suddenly sold to a random person solely for the sake of expanding a collection for the sake of diversity? And what of the male minorities that have donated art to the museum? Will that be sold as well, or will it be included with the women's art but separated into its own section?
To me, all these questions can be answered by not only seeing what happens in the future with this museum, but also through the museums previous expeditions into exploring diversity. According to NPR, the museum has sold Andy Warhol work before to make space for artwork from black artists. A Warhol piece is particularly expensive and something so valuable should probably be left in the hands of someone capable. Being able to replace something extremely popular from a white artist with a black artist is especially useful considering how black people make 60% of the population of Baltimore.(Limbong, 2019)
